Legal documents regarding the estate of the Guadagni family in Florence, 1545-1622.

The nearly 300 pages contain copies of legal documents regarding the Guadagni family estate, dated from 1545 to 1622, such as: acquisition of land and houses, lease contracts and litigation for inheritance rights or property boundaries. In many cases the documents include transcripts of previous transactions or lawsuits, some going back to the 15th century. One of the most important documents is the will of Filippo Guadagni, written in Italian and dated from May 13, 1555, shortly before his death. It is followed by the inventory of all his movable and immovable properties made after his death. The latter consists of the family house in Piazza del Duomo, the villa at Poggiuolo, and ten "poderi" - plots of land with houses and cattle, rented to farm workers. The inventory continues with a list of all movable goods found in the two family residences, described room by room. The list includes: jewelry, silverware, paintings, furniture, decorative objects, clothing and linen; also included are wares, utensils and tools in the kitchens, storage rooms and outbuildings. The documents attest the acquisition in 1596 of casa Buondelmonti in the proximity of the Opera del Duomo, as well as its remodelling and enlargement conducted by Filippo's eldest son, Alessandro, and his brother Vincenzo. The ledger documents a steady course of action aiming to enlarge step by step their property towards the so-called Opera del Duomo, reserved for painter and smith workshops of that site. After long-term leases of these shops, Alessandro obtained permission in 1611 to buy them, and then to build and redecorate. The large three story palazzo is located at no. 10, Piazza del Duomo, now known as Palazzo Strozzi di Mantova.
